The First Day at the Factory

Last week, ten fresh faces came to the Annex for the Factory’s first day of class. After filling out forms and exchanging names, each student listed their five favorite films in front of the group. For example, Win-Mon’s top five films included Burma VJ, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, Blue Valentine, Vertigo, and the Royal Tenenbaums.

As a part of BAVC’s Next Gen Program, Factory filmmakers have the opportunity to hone their media making skills in a collaborative environment. This year, The Factory is focusing its energies in support of local non-profit organizations and crafting compelling social justice stories. The new students spent part of their first day reading about the 14-year old Pakistani activist Malala Yousufzai, who was shot by a Taliban assailant for her advocation of a woman’s right to education in her country. Afterwards, the group discussed the importance of inspiring young adults like Malala and the potential impact of social media.
